Brian and Jessica
Just a young couple with a toddler, exploring the world and living life happily together!

It wasn't far into this past week before Brian and I both decided it was going to be a busy (and potentially difficult) week at work. We've kind of gotten into a routine that Saturdays are our day together each week, whether that includes dragging each other to various weddings and receptions or ward activities, or relaxing just the two of us (which never happens). In fact we haven't spent a Saturday apart since the first week we started dating, a trend I personally greatly enjoy. However, as mentioned before, it's a very rare occasion when we actually spend an entire day together just the two of us. Not that I'm complaining about spending time with family or friends (as I love both very dearly), but sometimes you just need that time. So this week we specifically decided our time together would be just that.
It turned out to be an absolutely gorgeous day and the threats of rain and thunderstorms held off until the late evening. We picked out a few hikes down here near me (Salt Lake City) that we wanted to explore and narrowed it down to two: the Brighton Lakes or Donut Falls. Brighton Lakes is an almost 4 mile round trip hike to explore the three lakes: Mary, Martha, and Catherine. We didn't have much information about Donut Falls, but it sounded neat so we decided on that.
Donut Falls "hike" turned out to be more of a scenic walk with minimal hiking until you got to the actual falls themselves. It was a relatively short hike to get to the falls, and the most exciting part was walking across the creek (or is it a river? Not sure, but in WV standards, it's not big enough to be a river) on fallen trees that criss cross across the water to get to the other side. I made a very unsmart decision to walk across the creek and subsequently almost froze my feet off from the ankles down, while Brian performed a series of acrobatics to climb across the trees.
Once we got to the falls, it was easy to see why it's called Donut Falls. The water jets through a rock and into a cave below that you can normally climb into, but with all the rain we've been having and the melting snow, the frigid water was rushing a little too quickly for us to climb down.
I'm beginning to fall more in love with Utah as I get to experience all the seasons. Summer has always been my favorite and while there aren't any real beaches in Utah, I think the mountains might have enough to keep me happily occupied during the warmer months.

Lastly, we finished our day outside at the pool at my apartment complex. Unfortunately it doesn't go deeper than 5 ft, but it was significantly warmer than the waterfalls (and interestingly empty for a Saturday evening), so we fulfilled our swimming wishes here instead.

This past weekend went much too quickly... like all weekends do. But this one went particularly quickly because it wasn't spent at home. Friday night, Brian and I carpooled with our favorite couple (Brian's cousin Randy and his super awesome wife, Sabra) to Downey, Idaho for his family's big family reunion. It was for the Baldwin side of the family which is quite large, and subsequently there was over 100 people all camping out and hanging out for the weekend. For anyone who's never been to Downata Hot Springs, it is literally out in the middle of nowhere, possibly more remote than West Virginia. To give you a better visual, it's only 30 minutes away from where Napoleon Dynamite was filmed. Luckily, Downey is much more lush and green than Preston. Brian's parents rented a cute little yurt (a circular tent-like building with windows and a sunroof) for us all to sleep in and really rough it camping out. Yes, that was sarcasm, as we were camping quite cushiony... if that's a word.. Anyway. Our time was spent playing volleyball, swimming in the springs and going down their 4 super sweet waterslides, and riding Razors around the property. At one point, Brian was driving the Razor and we had ventured out about 5 or 6 miles from the campground when the engine decided to overheat. We had to push it to turn it around and back to the top of the hill to coast a mile downhill and be able to turn the engine back on to make it all the way back to the campground. What's true trailblazing if you aren't worried about getting stranded in the rain in the middle of the rolling fields of Idaho? Anyway, it was a successful weekend which ended Saturday night with Chinese take out and movies on the couch-- a real rough end to camping.

This weekend was jam packed full of fun festivities but sadly the weather did not feel "Memorial Day warm." Welcome to Utah, I guess! Saturday we went to the Payson Temple open house! In true last minute fashion, we went the very last day of the open house and could have suffered for it, had we not cut out on the preliminary video and jumped right to the line touring through the temple. There was easily 500 people there and we got there at 10 AM. Luckily we made it through everything in about an hour and a half. My cousin, Kimmy, is out here visiting for a short time so we dragged her along with us for the day! It was a beautiful temple and I especially loved the grand double marble staircases with iron bars and deep wooden railings. It's so neat to see how each individual temple is different and specially themed. I've included a link with a video to see the inside, plus pictures for your viewing pleasure! :)

Monday was spent fourwheeling all day with Brian's parents out in Promontory. I meant to take pictures but we were all super muddy. Wonderful weekend outdoors, despite the chilly and rainy weather!

Fulfilled my dream of seeing Ed Sheeran in concert with my old (favorite) co-worker, her daughter, and her daughter's friend. It was an incredible concert, even with our nosebleed seats! Absolutely love his music and he played some of my new and old favorites :)

 The gang's all here.
 So worth the seats.

May 6-12, Brian and I went to Florida! It was the first time I've been back since I moved away and it was harder to leave than I imagined. I think we actually had a pretty full visit and accomplished doing all the things we wanted to and seeing all the people I missed so dearly though. Breakdown of our vacation: Beach, game night at Joe and Julie's with Kimberly and Austin, more beach with Jamesiepie, Rays game vs. the Rangers, seeing Ben and Alicia's home (post reconstruction), going to an amateur skating competition in Tampa, visiting Michael and Sarah, mandatory date night on Pier 60 and Clearwater Beach, church and seeing all my favorite people, Sunday family dinner, more beach, visiting one of the missionaries that taught me (Elder Nilsen still has 9 months left of his mission), Dinosaur World, not enough beach, and an extra night at Gramma's due to a tropical storm. Living in Florida for those 6 months last year was the best decision I've made in years.

"You'll never be completely at home again because a part of your heart will always be elsewhere. That is the price you pay for knowing and loving people in more than one place..."

Kimberly's brother and sister-in-law recently had a new baby boy, Alexander. He is precious! (And Kevin & Shannon have already carted him to numerous Rays games, way to be guys!!)

Joe and Julie have the cutest boys, I swear. Welcome to the Meyers family, Baby Seth! You are PERFECT.

I've already been replaced as the boys favorites. As soon as Brian picked up a light saber and played Star Wars, he won them over.

Date night at Clearwater Beach and Pier 60.

Florida sunsets are the best sunsets.

I don't think a better picture has ever been taken of Elder Nilsen and I.

Brian borrowed Kimmy's skimboard and was quite good at it, my snowboarding, skateboarding, longboarding balancing wiz of a boyfriend.

My favorite homies.

Let's start off by talking about how surprised I was when Brian asked me to go out on Valentine's Day. I actually told him it was ok if we didn't go out or do anything because of the social stigmas attached to the commercial holiday. But he insisted that he wanted to see me this day just as much as any other, so he told me to be dressed and ready to go at 6 and he would have everything planned out... or so he thought!
He picked me up at 6 and we headed off to City Creek Mall. He had tried to do his homework and had asked my best friend, Jessica Fox, where was a restaurant in Utah that I had wanted to go for awhile, but hadn't actually been to yet? The funny thing was, Jessica got a conversation she had with her sister mixed up with me, and so Brian took me to Pizza Studio, a place I "had told Jessica I really wanted to go to." It was really yummy, but I waited until after we had paid and devoured half the pizza to tell Brian I had never actually heard of the place. I knew if I told him before that, he would insist we go somewhere else that I actually wanted to go to.
Next up: the aquarium! Apparently there is this really cool aquarium in Draper called the Loveland Living Aquarium, so we headed off to go see it! Brian had looked up what was going on there that evening, and they had Valentine's dinner packages where you purchased tickets and then wound up being in a big group for the evening and got to see the aquarium. Brian thought it would be more fun if we got dinner on our own and then headed to the aquarium... Only problem is, it wasn't open past 6 pm for anyone who didn't have the special dinner reservations hahaha.
I couldn't help but laugh. The poor guy tried planning out every perfect detail and nothing went as planned. We wound up driving up to my favorite temple (Draper) since Brian had never been and walking around, before heading back to my apartment and watching a movie. But it was perfect! I didn't know being with someone could always be so fun and make me so happy. My time with him is the best part of every week, and I'm so grateful he's willing to drive 45 minutes one way to see me. :)
